Crowds greeting the 159th Infantry Regiment, Broadway, Oakland, California (April 28, 1919) 1The 159th Infantry Regiment was drafted into service on August 5, 1917 in response to the United States' involvement in World War I. From September 24, 1917 to November 1, 1917 the regiment, along with the 2nd Infantry Regiment were consolidated and assigned to the 40th Division.
On April 28, 1919 Oakland's 159th Infantry Regiment returned home from serving in World War I. The largest crowd in the history of Oakland, California came out to greet the returning troops.
The 159th Infantry Regiment was demobilized on May 1, 1919 at the Presidio in San Francisco, California.
