There was an ongoing and epic fight to close the saloons in Oakland. The City Council finally voted to close them on May 25, 1906, but that wasn't the end of it.
In the Husted's Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley Directory of 1910 was listed an Anti-Saloon League, State - 94-95 Bacon Bldg. Rev. J. A. Thomas, supt Oakland District; Rev. T. H. Lawson, supt N. W. District.
in my research on city council i've found mentions to closing saloons for probably 20 years spanning the late 1800s to, so far, the early 1900s. i'm not sure, yet, how closely this ties to the national temperance movement but this is potentially a huge topic for research. -gk
