Champaign-Urbana has had a long history of civil rights for minority groups, especially led by African-Americans, who have protested and successfully challenged unequal living and working conditions since at least the 1870s. A high-point in the local civil rights struggle came in the early 1960s, when the community organized to protest unequal working conditions in downtown Champaign.
