This housewas built in 1883 , at a cost of $50,000, by George W. Gay, co-founder of the Berkey and Gay Furniture Company. Louis Campau, founder of Grand Rapids built the first house to occupy this site. Lumber from Campau's house was used in the construction of the carriage house.
