Wealthy Theatre is a historic vaudeville and live theater that has been repurposed as a neighborhood community theater. It is located at 1130 Wealthy Street SE, in the Baxter Neighborhood, and is currently owned and operated by Community Media Center

History

Wealthy Theatre was built in 1911 and initially closed in the late 1970s.  Before its closure,  the theatre acted as a warehouse for the Michigan Aircraft Company during World War I, and in the 1960s, it offered the only regional venue for foreign films. The theatre remained closed until South East Economic Development (SEED) launched a capital campaign to fund its restoration. The theater reopened as a community performing arts center in 1998 and is considered to be the catalyst for economic redevelopment in the Wealthy Street Business District. In 2005, Wealthy Theatre became a part of Grand Rapids Community Media Center.
