Marston Campbell Park is located at 17th St. and West St. in West Oakland adjacent to Lafayette Elementary School. It has a large field, a playground, and a youth-led community garden, and provides a nice place for the children of Lafayette Elementary to play.
Who is this park named after? PLEASE ANSWER. [User Mike replies (2013-02-04): Marston Campbell seems to have been a civil engineer, born in Oakland, who was involved with Bay Bridge feasibility studies in the early 1920s (a decade prior to its construction), and then the first president of EBMUD … but I’m conducting more research, because what little I’ve found so far is rather spotty – no life dates yet, for instance.]
It was named for Marston Campbell (1867 - 1933), the son of educator Frederick Campbell. Marston was a civil engineer, president of EBMUD, and held various positions in the city. He was born in Oakland, but he lived and worked in Hawai'i from 1899 to 1919.
