Neighborhood Champions Awards Ceremony

On Saturday, March 8, the Oakland Police Foundation, in coordination with the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Make Oakland Better Now!, recognized members of law enforcement, the clergy, and outreach and human services workers during the Neighborhood Champions Awards Ceremony.

Honorees have worked strategically in making an effort to lower the violence in East Oakland. Violent crime is down in East Oakland neighborhoods thanks to community members working in partnership with the Oakland Police Department (OPD) and other agencies to remove the most violent offenders and keep them off the streets.

The awards ceremony, honoring those who exemplify community policing partnerships, was held at Acts Full Gospel Church at 1034 66th Avenue. Among the honorees were Captain Kirk Coleman, District 5 Commander; Captain Ersie Joyner, III, who manages the OPD Ceasefire and Compstat programs; Sergeants Kevin Reed and Frederick Shavies; Lieutenant Trevelyon Jones; Project Ceasefire Manager Reygan Harmon; Crime Analyst Andrea Van Peteghem; and the following officers: Jose Barocio, Daniel Bruce, Ross Curtin, Eric Karsseboom, Christophe Marie, Richard Niven, Jeffrey Smoak, Jurrell Snyder, Anthony Tedesco and Steve Valle.

Ben McBride, pastor of City Team Ministries; and the Rev. Larry Ashley, pastor of Cosmopolitan Baptist Church. Also receiving awards were: the Rev.
