The Regillus Apartments stands at 200 Lakeside Drive and 19th Street, on the former site of August Schilling's magnificent mansion across from Lake Merritt, Oakland, California. Designed by architect Willis C. Lowe 2 in 1921-1922 and built by P. A. Palmer. 3 The building has 47 luxury apartments. The original the carriage house and the gardens from the Schilling estate remained when the Regillus was constructed.
This high-end apartment was one of many buildings built in the 1920s on the edge of Lake Merritt where stately mansions once stood. The Regillus was one of the eight high rise apartment buildings which were constructed near Lake Merritt during the economic boom of the 1920s. From 14th to 19th Streets the area was gradually transformed from one of beautiful estates to a luxury apartment district.
Beaux Arts architectural style with balconies and balustrades provided luxury to tenants of the 8-story building with such features as circular drive with cobblestones, marble grand entrance, formal lobby, salons, concierge, and beautiful gardens.
The apartments included wood-burning fireplace, large windows and formal dining room. High ceilings with classic moldings, hardwood floors and a kitchen pantries.
Currently, the Regillus has been converted into luxury condominiums with a doorman and concierge service, a manicured courtyard garden and covered parking.
