The Old Capitol Building, located on a full block fronting Sylvester park.
It has served as a home for the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction since 1906.
HISTORY
Originally, the Old Capitol Building was built as the Thurston County Courthouse. The West Wing of
the building was used as the County courthouse for 13 years.
Since then, there has been many changes. Check out the building timeline!
1901~ Building was purchased for $350,000 for use as the State Capitol. A new wing was added to the building as a home for the state Senate and House of Representatives.
1905~ The inauguration of Gov. Albert E. Mead
1910~ The state purchased the block that the buiolding stand on.
1919~ House most of the state agencies
1949~ Earthquake resulted in the loss of 10 to 12 towers
1983~ Old Capitol Building Renovation Project was completed
