UNC Chapel Hill is the founding campus of the University of North Carolina, a public research university and one of the oldest in the United States; it is the only one to confer degrees in the 18th century. Today, it serves over 29,000 students. Located in the town of Chapel Hill, UNC is the economic and cultural center of the town, and directly abuts the historic but growing downtown. Carolina prides itself on a strong, diverse student body, academic opportunities not found anywhere else, and a value unmatched by any public university in the nation.

Home of the Tar Heels: A group of North Carolina soldiers scolded their comrades for leaving the battlefield when things got tough. The soldiers threatened to stick tar on the heels of the retreating soldiers to help them stay in the battle. General Robert E. Lee is said to have commented “God bless the Tar Heel boys!” Whatever the reason for the moniker, our students and sports teams have long worn it with pride.
