Purple Martin Greenway Trail

The Purple Martin Greenway was introduced in 2015 as the first nature trail system in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The trail is named after the Purple Martin bird that appeared on General Griffith Rutherford's family crest. This trail system offers a 2-mile paved trail that runs alongside wildlife, creeks and a small waterfall. It is suitable for biking, children, animals and it is handicap accessible. The Purple Martin Greenway Trails offers an escape into wilderness while being close to local metropolitan areas such as Downtown Rutherfordton (NC), Asheville (NC), Charlotte (NC), Greenville (NC), and Spartanburg (NC).

Parks

It connects two neighboring parks Crestview Park and Kiwanis Park.  These parks offer many features including playgrounds, ballparks, picnic areas, dog parks and restrooms. Park and town activities are held throughout the year such as Movies in the Park, Ruff'ton Roots Garden Work Gathering and Mayfest. Both parks are well-used by local sports teams and schools. Crestview Park contains three Little League baseball fields, one tee ball field, four lit tennis courts, two lit basketball courts, three playgrounds, horseshoes and picnic shelters. Kiwanis Park contains six picnic tables, charcoal grills and swings.

Park Crossing Apartments

Park Crossing Apartments are affordable luxury apartments that were built on the Purple Martin Greenway Trail as a new addition to the nearby housing. These apartments created hundreds of new housing opportunities for nearby residents and have brought outside attention to the area. These apartments offer a view of the trail ways and the North Carolina Foothills.
