In Savannah, there are many local places to go for information on ancestors.

First, and loaded with information, is the Kaye Kole Genealogy and Local History Room. It is located inside the Live Oak Library at 2002 Bull St. on the first floor, to the left as you enter. It has many resources NOT found online. The microfilm for the Savannah Morning News is located there as well as indexes for the News. While the indexes do not cover the entire history of the Morning News (which began January 15, 1850) it does have indexes covering from 1850 to 1899. The indexes pick up again in the 1930s and continue to the mid-1990s. As with most items created by people, they do not always cover every page of the paper. The librarians are more than happy to help you locate the information you need.

If you prefer to do your research online, start with their page listing not only their resources but other links as well. One other link of interest is the Savannah Morning News Obituaries form. Again, it is limited as all years are not covered. Just FYI, early years, like the 1850s to 1890s have very few, if any, obits. Death notices don't start to appear regularly until some time in the 1920s. Most appeared on page 2A but some are scattered through the paper. It is much later before a standard obituary page appeared.

Another place to check out is the Georgia Historical Society. The resources there a more academic in nature but depending on the relative, you could find that story always told. You can go to Hodgson Hall to do your research but there are restrictions. Check out the webpage before heading out. There is also a page to request research on a person/subject.

Another source, though not just specific to geneology, is the City of Savannah Municipal Archives. They are not open to walk-ins but you can request an appointment to do research. The holdings contain a history of the city.

The city's cemeteries also have listings of the graves. Head over to the page for the five city-maintained cemeteries. Two locations have a kiosk where you can enter a name and locate a grave. Or again, you can search online for burial records.
