Jan was elected Mayor in 2010.  She served on the City Council from 1998 to 2002 and was re-elected with the highest number of votes in 2008.  Council appointed her to represent the city regionally on the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments, San Luis Obispo Regional Transportation Agency and the Air Pollution Control District. She has practiced estate planning, real property and local government law and has owned her own business for 17 years. She has also taught Business Law at Cal Poly.

Jan has earned degrees from Santa Clara Law School (J.D.); Stanford University (B.A.), Columbia University (M.A.). She is a former Deputy District Attorney with extensive training in mediation and negotiation. She has been in charge of budgets as Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Housing at Stanford University and Dean of Students at Scripps College.  She is a former private high school and community college English Teacher. A long time San Luis Obispo homeowner, she is married with two grown children and four grandsons. She loves to hike, travel, cook and read. For more details, see her Current Resume
