Villa Philbrook was built 1927 by oilman Waite Phillips and designed by Kansas City architect Edward Buehler Delk in and Italian Renaissance style. In 1938 Phillips announced that the 72-room mansion and surround 23 acres of land would be gifted as an art center for the city of Tulsa.
The museum opened October 25, 1939. It was known as the Philbrook Art Center until 1987, when the name was changed to Philbrook Museum of Art The collection housed at the Philbrook Museum of Art includes works from Giovanni Bellini, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, William Merritt Chase, Leonardo Drew, Arturo Herrera, Charles Loloma, Maria Martinez, Thomas Moran, Pablo Picasso, Fritz Scholder, Tanzio da Varallo, Rachel Whiteread, and Andrew Wyeth.
Today, the museum serves 150,000 visitors annually and will be expanding to include Philbrook Downtown in 2013, which will include modern and contemporary are and allow for permanent display of its expansive collection of Native American art.
